Between the light of the Aegean and the sea silence of Diakofti, where wood is still carved and the water have memories, Patmos is preparing to welcome a special exhibition entitled “From Counter stern to Sterm: Sailboats of the 18th and 19th century”.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition opens its doors on Sunday 20 July 2025 at 18:30, at the Patmos Marine’s boatyard, where the boats are born and return to tell their story. This is an exhibition that not only tells the maritime history of the place, but brings it to life in a contemporary, experiential and deeply moving way. Through archives, ship models, old drawings, technical prints and rare photographic material, the visitor enters the world of the sailing ships that dominated the Greek seas in the 18th and 19th centuries – the era of handmade shipbuilding, seamanship and maritime trade, which turned the Aegean islands into hubs of culture and economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes the exhibition unique is the use of virtual and augmented reality (VR\/AR) technologies, which allow the visitor to digitally tour historic boats, follow their construction process, but also experience life on the deck of an old boat for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The placement of the exhibition in the Patmos Marine shipyard is no coincidence. The place itself bears memory and maritime continuity. There, in the natural embrace of Diakofti, the hulls are not just exhibits; they are living bodies, returning to their element to tell the story all over again. And as the light falls on the tools, ropes and canvas, one feels that the maritime art is not a thing of the past, but lives on – silently, but essentially. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition will be open daily, from Monday to Saturday, from 10:00-14:00 and 18:00-20:00, while on Sundays it is open by appointment at 6976151097. Entrance is free and the experience is valuable both for history and seafaring enthusiasts and for families wishing to learn about the cultural identity of the Aegean through a journey through time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patmos, with its gaze turned to the sky and its roots tied to the wave, hosts an exhibition that unites the past with the present, and invites us all to stand for a moment between the Aina and the bow – where the sea becomes memory, and memory becomes the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition “From Counter stern to Sterm” is implemented in the framework of the research project Virtual Historic Sailing Ships, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Shipping & Island Policy, It is co-organized by the Institute of Mediterranean Studies (IMS-FORTH), the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering of the University of the Aegean, the Folklore and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia-Thrace and the company TETRAGON S.A. E. as the main production force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
