The 14th Aegean Film Festival in Patmos
The Aegean Film Festival returns for the 14th year in Patmos, turning the island into a vibrant film hub from 18 to 25 July 2025.
The festival, which for more than a decade has been giving a voice to independent filmmakers and promoting cinema as a tool for dialogue and change, this year presents a more ambitious and multi-dimensional programme than ever before. More than 60 movies and short films, documentaries, virtual reality movies and thematic tributes will be hosted in screenings at the summer cinemas set up as every year on the island – Marianna and Starfish – as well as in unexpected venues such as cultural centres and beaches. The festival opens on 18 July with Colours of Time and The Librarians, and continues with a packed seven-day festival that mixes cinema with nature, technology and social dialogue.

The official programme includes the competition sections of Aegean Shorts and Greek Shorts, with new works from Greece and abroad, as well as special tributes to environmental issues through the Echoes theme. At the same time, for the first time this year, the audience will have the opportunity to experience 9 immersive virtual reality projects, which participate in the new VR Seahorse Award.

But the film festival is not just about screenings: daily discussions, panels, masterclasses and presentations are organised, aiming to connect creators and audiences. The photography exhibitions of Elias Cosindas and Linda Kessler at the Patmion Cultural Centre have a special place this year, while the established parties – such as the one at Benettos or the closing event in a “secret location” – promise unforgettable summer nights.

The official festival awards are presented in 7 categories, with cash prizes for the best short films, VR productions, and audience participation through the Audience Award. In addition, the festival offers hospitality, professional networks and project presentation opportunities to the selected filmmakers, thus actively supporting the production and promotion of independent cinema.

Patmos, with its serene and historic aura, is an ideal backdrop for the event, as it combines natural beauty with a deeply spiritual and creative character. The Aegean Film Festival is not just a series of screenings – it is a platform for cultures, ideas and people to come together in an inspiring island summer. From 18 to 25 July, Patmos once again becomes the epicentre of independent cinema. If you find yourself on the island, don’t miss the chance to experience a week full of images, sounds and stories from all over the world.
