Christina Nakou – “Mosaics: An Art of Durable Materiality”

Visual artist Christina Nakou presents the exhibition “Mosaics: An Art of Durable Materiality” at the Stavrakas House in Hora, Patmos, from August 13 to 30, 2025. Through mosaic creations applied to everyday objects, the power of the material, its timelessness, and the close relationship between art and matter are highlighted.

Christina Nakou studied painting and sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts, specializing in mosaics (alongside Yannis Valavanidis and Daphne Angelidou, among others). She has participated in exhibitions at European festivals and museums, such as the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Architecture Biennale and the Architecture Center in Vienna, while her works have been presented at the Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil, as well as at cultural venues in Barcelona, Florence, and Athens.

This exhibition brings together both the artist’s rich history and a sense of reflection, where mosaics become a means of exploring timeless values through contrasts: decay and durability, the material and the spiritual, memory and the present. At the heart of the exhibition is a talk by Christina Nakou in dialogue with Professor Silvia Ronchey, which will take place on August 29 at 8:30 p.m. The lecture will focus on the materiality of mosaics as a different experience of the flow of time, as well as on concepts such as durability, decay, physicality, and transformation, through an interdisciplinary lens with references to environmental protection and the impact of artificial intelligence.

At the same time, the mosaic artist’s tools will be presented, offering the public a direct introduction to the technique and process of creating mosaics. The exhibition also explores concepts such as presence, absence, and memory, reflecting on the relationship between humans and art in a world that is changing rapidly due to artificial intelligence.

The exhibition is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with free admission. The exhibition will open on August 13, 2025.
