HOUSTON CAFE

Houston

coffee - food

The traces of the building can be traced back to the end of the 19th century and it is recognized as an Italian coffee house. In fact, it is probably the first café on the island, under the name “Italia”. At the beginning of the 20th century the building was bought by the Karalis family, who owned it until recently, always operating it as a café. Sometime in 1955 it takes its present name “Houston”, after Michael Karalis son of Andreas, who was for years an immigrant in America, in Houston. Since then, it has remained firmly in the hands of Andreas’ four children – Michael, Katina, Kleanthi and Stamatia, until 2017, the date on which it was reborn.

Responsible for this renaissance is John Kavouras, son of the godfather of the last generation of Karalis family and his companion in this project, Alex Agrios. A big congratulations is due to both of them, because they took a piece of history and walking a very fine line, they managed to create something contemporary without altering almost anything of the sense of the past! It’s not easy at all to maintain the patina of time without making something “quaint” and at the same time responding to modern demands and needs.

It’s not a coincidence that the advent of Houston has dramatically changed the entertainment tastes of locals and foreigners alike, creating fanatics already in its short history. Houston is a hangout for all hours, from early morning to late night. It serves coffee, pastries, breakfast, snacks, salads and appetizers. All under the almost obsessive supervision of Alex and John, who profess to be passionate about food. In their menu you will find a variety of non-standard choices, some of which draw their origins from the historical past! Houston is definitely a must-do on the island.
